Amidst persistent poor air quality in Delhi, the government has decided to extend the ban on BS3 petrol and BS4 diesel cars, despite the relaxation of GRAP-4 measures. With the Air Quality Index (AQI) at a concerning 324, the Delhi government is imposing a hefty fine of Rs 20,000 for violators, emphasising its commitment to tackling the alarming pollution levels.
Delhi's Environment Minister, Gopal Rai, stressed the necessity of sustained public awareness to uphold incremental improvements in air quality. Despite gradual enhancement, the government remains cautious due to low wind speeds, hindering further progress.
The latest measures include a ban on construction activities, with exceptions for projects of national significance. Delhi has also restricted the entry of BS3 and BS4 vehicles from other cities, solidifying its commitment to curbing vehicular emissions. While some restrictions on buses and trucks have been eased, the ban on specific vehicles remains a key aspect of the city's pollution control strategy.
Minister Rai appealed to the citizens of Delhi and North India to exercise caution and vigilance. He stressed the importance of avoiding complacency, citing a post-Diwali surge in AQI due to carelessness.
As of now, Delhi adheres to a combination of Grap-1, Grap-2, and Grap-3 restrictions. Speculation surrounds the potential lifting of the ban on BS3 petrol and BS4 diesel vehicles, but no specific timeline has been provided. The government maintains a dynamic approach, closely monitoring air quality parameters to determine effective and sustainable pollution control strategies.
This extension of the ban on BS3 petrol and BS4 diesel cars underscores the gravity of the air quality crisis in Delhi.
